Песня посвящена труду шахтеров, которые вынуждены покупать продукты втридорога в магазине, принадлежащем компании, и попадают в кабалу. Иногда рабочим платили ваучерами, которые можно было обменять только в магазине компании.

У американцев много хороших настоящих песен, ставших "народными".
